Since 17 July 1914 the island has been an external territory of Australia. From 1 July 1979 to 30 June 2016 it held self-governing status under the Norfolk Island Act. Since 1 July 2016 its administrative body has been the Norfolk Island Regional Council led by a President. An Administrator appointed by the Governor-General of Australia represents the state, and foreign affairs and defense remain the responsibility of the Australian government.
