Martinique — an island in the Caribbean Sea, an overseas department and region of France, where the official language is French.
Since 19 March 1946 Martinique has held the status of an overseas department and region of France. Since 1 January 2016 its single territorial collectivity has been governed by the Assembly of Martinique and an Executive Council headed by a President. A Prefect represents the French State, and foreign affairs and defense remain the responsibility of the French government.
