Since 21 February 2007, under Organic Law No. 2007-224, the territory has held the status of an overseas territorial collectivity. Executive power is exercised by a Superior Administrator appointed by the French Republic, assisted by a Superior Council of five district representatives. French laws and regulations apply with adaptations for local conditions. Defense and foreign affairs remain the responsibility of the French government.
