Hong Kong — a city-state and Special Administrative Region of China, located on the southern coast by the South China Sea, enjoying a high degree of autonomy under the “one country, two systems” principle and governed by the Hong Kong Basic Law, currency — Hong Kong dollar (HKD).

Since July 1, 1997, when sovereignty was transferred from the United Kingdom to China, Hong Kong has operated as a Special Administrative Region, it has its own Chief Executive as head of the executive branch, the Legislative Council as its legislature, an independent common-law judiciary, and foreign affairs and defense remain under the responsibility of the central government of the People’s Republic of China.
